The Executive Resume Reset

Why senior professionals are being silently rejected
I’ve been in recruiting for 15+ years.
At IBM and in global corporate environments, I have advised at executive level across IT, data, AI, engineering, pharma, and corporate functions.
I can tell within 7–10 seconds if a CV belongs to someone who will get interviews… or someone who will stay invisible.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Most senior and executive resumes I see are not “bad.”
They are outdated.
Which is worse.
Because outdated signals something very dangerous:
Not lack of experience.
But lack of market awareness.
And in today’s hiring market, especially in Germany and across Europe, that’s a red flag.
Not a small one.
A decisive one.
The invisible rejection
You don’t get feedback saying:
Your CV looks like 2008.
Instead, what happens is:
- You apply → no response
- You get interviews → but no offer
- You get told “strong profile, but we chose another candidate”
And you start thinking:
- Maybe it’s my age
- Maybe it’s the market
- Maybe it’s internal candidates
Sometimes that’s true.
But very often, the real reason is this:
→ Your CV does not signal how you create value today
It signals how you worked in the past
Why this is critical for executives
At senior level, nobody hires you for tasks.
You are hired for:
- decision quality
- business impact
- scale
- stakeholder influence
If your CV reads like a list of responsibilities, you are positioning yourself as:
→ Replaceable
→ Operational
→ Tactical
Not strategic.
Not promotable.
Not hireable at the level you want.
The biggest mistake I see
Senior professionals try to “summarize their career.”
Instead of positioning themselves for the next role.
That is the gap.
And that gap is expensive.
Because the market is not reading your CV like a biography.
It reads it like a risk assessment document.
